Chief Standing Bear Statue Dedication
October 15, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
The 11-foot-tall bronze statue honoring Ponca Chief Standing Bear, the legendary civil rights leader, was dedicated on Oct. 15, 2017 in Lincoln. Created by renowned artist Benjamin Victor, the statue depicts one of the country’s earliest human rights cases in which a federal court found Chief Standing Bear to be a person within the meaning of the law. The statue is mounted on a pedestal in front of a wall bearing the words from Standing Bear’s famous 1879 courtroom speech in which he stated, “This hand is not the color of yours, but if I pierce it, I shall feel pain. If you pierce your hand, you also feel pain. The blood that will flow from mine will be of the same color as yours. The same God made us both. I am a Man.”
