Chief Standing Bear Statue Dedication

October 15, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

The dedication of a statue honoring Ponca Chief Standing Bear depicting the historic Omaha court case in which the chief was found to be a person under the law by judge Dundy in one of the earliest human rights cases in American history. The 9 foot tall bronze statute commissioned by Lincoln native Don Campbell was created by renowned artist Ben Victor and will serve as a reminder to all of this Nebraska story of equality and human rights. The statue will be mounted on a pedestal in front of a wall bearing words from Standing Bear’s famous courtroom speech in which he stated “God made me and I am a Man.” A native dance and drum group will perform from 12:30 to 1:00 followed by short remarks from various dignitaries, followed by unveiling of the statue and an honor song. Reception follows with light refreshments and snacks, viewing of smaller scale maquettes and meet and greet with the artist.
