The Corn Goddess Art Collaboration
January 6, 2017 - March 31, 2017
The Corn Goddess relief is the inspiration for this unique artist collaboration. Nicole Battelle will bring the Goddess to full scale life in folded paper and Swarovski crystals. The sculpture will be created in monochromatic golden tones which reference shades of corn as well as a noble presence. Margaret Berry will create an engaging cornfield background in encaustic (wax) paint. Margaret is the first artist-in-residence in the hotel and will lend space to the project in her atrium studio window. Corn has been a frequent theme in her encaustic artwork while Nicole has focused on exquisite paper artistry.
Once the collaborative piece is unveiled on January 6th, the artists will invite viewers take a selfie photo with the hashtag #CornGoddess to raise awareness of the project and celebrate the NE150 year. A commemorative book will be published later elaborating the story of the Corn Goddess , the artistic processes behind her creation and featuring the selfies.
Much like the Sower sculpture, the Corn Goddess is an elegant and timeless symbol of Nebraska’s agricultural heritage and Native Nebraskan corn culture. The concept for the collaboration is to bring to life this beautiful stone sculpture which has silently observed many dignitaries and historic events at the Cornhusker Hotel. The artists hope to surprise and delight Nebraska viewers while connecting them to their proud heritage of sowing and growing. For other visitors, the artwork will provide a stylish contemporary interpretation of the importance of corn in our state.
