Dedication of the National Willa Cather Center and the Willa Cather Spring Conference
June 1, 2017 - June 3, 2017
As a Pulitzer Prize winner, Nebraskan Willa Cather is one of the most acclaimed 20th-century American authors. As appreciation for Cather and her hometown grows, the Willa Cather Foundation is creating a state-of-the-art archive, museum and arts center called The National Willa Cather Center, which will become a distinct attraction unlike any other. The project is so exciting that documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is serving as the Honorary National Chair and former First Lady Laura Bush has provided ongoing support, noting that “Willa Cather’s literature gives voice to the values that define America’s frontier heritage. By reading her words and promoting her contributions to western culture, we commemorate the pioneering spirit that distinguishes us a nation.”
This event will take place in conjunction with the Willa Cather Foundation’s 62nd Annual Willa Cather Spring Conference June 1-3, 2017. Much like the National Willa Cather Center, the Spring Conference will provide a setting to examine Nebraska history through Cather’s work, including themes like westward expansion, railroads and settlement of the Plains. Because Red Cloud, Nebraska, is home to the largest collection of nationally designated historic sites dedicated to an American author, there will be ample opportunities for participants to revisit sites and scenes of the past as they celebrate Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial.
