Lincoln El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

November 5, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm

El Dia de los Muertos is a traditional holiday in many parts of Mexico and most Central and South American countries. It traditionally consists of two days, November 1st and 2nd, and is most simply defined as a holiday in which people in Latin American cultures honor their deceased loved ones with altars decorated with flowers, candles, food, and other traditional items and celebrate a symbolic reunion with these spirits with food, music and dancing.

“El Dia” (as it is often called for short) has become a more popular holiday across Nebraska and other parts of the U.S. over the last couple of decades because of the larger numbers of Latino immigrants who have arrived here during that period. However, Lincoln’s celebration has a history of it’s own. It was held at UNL’s Sheldon Museum of Art from a number of years until 2014 and was continued by the Lux in 2015. The partners in this year’s event used 2016 as a planning year and they aim to reinstate the event as a real citywide celebration. The 150th year celebration is a perfect time to do this!
