Nebraska Artifact Show-13th Annual
August 19, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The annual Nebraska Artifact Show is a non-commercial exhibition sponsored by the Nebraska Archaeological Society (NAS) now in its 13th year. This event is for the exhibition of authentic Native American artifacts and related items. No buying or selling of antiquities is permitted. We have a free presentation at 1:30 P.M., usually featuring a professional archaeologist or historian. Past NAS shows have had participation from the National Park Service-MWAC office, Lincoln, NE; the Nebraska State Historical Society (the NAS show has been the “launch” event for the celebration of Nebraska Archeology Month in September). Also participating in previous shows has been the University of Nebraska Museum-Paleontology Department. We have over 100 display tables featuring world class exhibits of Prehistoric stone artifacts from the Great Plains region, free educational materials and activities, a raffle, professional identification of artifacts and bones brought to the show by visitors, and a flint knapping demonstration (the process by which flint is shaped into tools and weapons). NAS also provides two scholarships the winners of which are announced at this annual event. These scholarships are awarded to college students studying archaeology. The NAS endeavors to develop a better understanding of archaeology among the general public, students, amateur collectors of archaeological material, archaeological professionals, and museums and educational institutions. In addition, NAS furthers archaeological education by publishing articles of interest by both professional and amateur archaeologists in our newsletter. In this 150th anniversary of Nebraska’s statehood, NAS seeks to promote our education and understanding of Nebraska’s prehistoric history. A key component of that mission is the annual Nebraska Artifact Show. We are a non-profit organization. Admission to the Nebraska Artifact Show is $5 Adults; no admission charged for children 12 and under.
