The year 2017 will mark the 146th time Arbor Day has been celebrated in Nebraska City. In 1872, Nebraska City resident J. Sterling Morton petitioned the Nebraska legislature to make a new holiday dedicated to the planting of and caring for trees. It was a statewide holiday from the start—that first Arbor Day, more than one million trees were planted across Nebraska.

Since then, Arbor Day has grown—it is now celebrated in all 50 states and in many countries worldwide. However, no one celebrates Arbor Day quite like Nebraska City does, with three solid days of activities. On Friday, April 28, hundreds of local school children will participate in the Children’s Program at Arbor Lodge and they each go home with a free tree of their own to plant. Also on Friday is the annual Blossom Ball at Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard. Saturday’s events include a Fun Run, a co-ed softball tournament, plant sales, craft shows, cosmic bowling, and the Arbor Day Parade. Sunday brings a Fly-In Breakfast at the local airport and the Nebraska Bloody Mary State Championships. Throughout the weekend, local retailers offer specials and all the town’s museums are open.
