During the 2016-2017 school year, the sixty-three Omaha Public (Elementary) Schools will be implementing four lessons per grade level based on the theme “We Are Nebraska.” Lessons connect with the Nebraska State Standards for Social Studies and English Language Arts (ELA) and encourage students’ connections to Nebraska’s history and heritage. Lessons were written by OPS teachers. Not only does the program provide lessons to help students learn about Nebraska, but it also creates an engaging educational opportunity for the entire school body. Each individual school will track their progress toward the culminating celebration by completing the lessons and projects using the OPS provided poster, “On Track to Celebrating Nebraska’s 150th Birthday!” (See attached image). On March 1, 2017, all sixty-three elementary schools will participate in the statewide Sing-Along of Happy Birthday Nebraska. In addition, schools that have completed their poster will receive a popcorn party and a book about Nebraska for their school library.
